Does “Homeland” Misrepresent Muslims?
The show has been criticized by some for its portrayal of Muslims, particularly Al Jazeera broadcast journalist Laila Al-Arian, who wrote a widely-read, scathing review for Salon, and foreign affairs editor Peter Beaumont of The Guardian, who wrote that “it does not matter whether [the Arabs and Muslims] are rich, smart, discreetly enjoying a western lifestyle or attractive: all are to be suspected.” Beaumont also criticized the way the show portrayed the political realities of the Middle East, writing that “there is more to it than the portrayal of individuals. For Homeland presents an odd and unbelievable image of relationships between countries and identities in the region, where Palestinians, Iraqis, Saudis all share an agenda regardless of background, culture and history.” However, the subject remains fiercely debated, with many other writers like Yair Rosenberg for The Atlantic and The Tablet’s Zach Novetsky arguing that those criticizing the show’s politics are misinterpreting what’s actually being shown.
