Why Does “Better Call Saul” Open With Jimmy Working at a Nebraska Cinnabon?
In one of Saul Goodman’s (Bob Odenkirk) final scenes on Breaking Bad (2008), he was preparing to flee Albuquerque after Walter White’s criminal activity surfaces with the DEA. As Saul’s extractor is arranging for him to “disappear,” he is holed up in the basement of a safehouse having a conversation with Walter (Bryan Cranston) where he outlines the “best case scenario” for his future.
“I’m not your lawyer anymore. I’m nobody’s lawyer. The fun’s over. From here on out, I’m Mr. Low Profile, just another douchebag with a job and three pairs of Dockers. If I’m lucky, a month from now, best case scenario, I’m managing a Cinnabon in Omaha.”
The opening scene in Better Call Saul‘s (2015) first episode is a jump-ahead from Breaking Bad‘s timeline; the only scene of its kind in the spinoff that is otherwise a prequel.
Though the scene may have been odd for anyone who watched Better Call Saul without having seen Breaking Bad, it’s a nice little reference for the fans of both shows that reveals an Omaha Cinnabon is exactly where Saul ended up.
