Is the “Teen Beach 2” Story Founded on Flawed Logic?
Much of the story of Disney’s Teen Beach 2 (2015) may leave you saying, “What?”
Teen Beach Movie (2013), which was a wonderful homage to a bygone film style full of catchy tunes and clever structure, carried all of the novelty and none of the subtlety to its sequel. Teen Beach 2 is disconnected and ignorant of what worked the first time. It draws on some of the charms of the first film and gratuitously exploits them, as if the writer’s room conversations were “Hey, Tanner (Garrett Clayton) was sort of quirky in the first film - let’s make an entire sequel out of that!”
It’s also a story based on various premises that contradict significant elements of the first film. At times, it’s hard to believe the sequel was directed by the same man as its predecessor (Jeffrey Hornaday), since such destructive retcons exist.
The biggest issue is that the foundation of Teen Beach 2 is built upon something contradictory to evidence of what came before. In the first film, it’s clear that Mack (Maia Mitchell) had never fully watched Wet Side Story, the favorite movie of her boyfriend Brady (Ross Lynch) which the couple magically gets transported into for the bulk of the film. On many occasions during the story, Brady has to explain basic plot points of the film-within-the-film to her as if she has no knowledge of the story. Now, Teen Beach 2‘s narrative tells us Wet Side Story was the catalyst for the two originally meeting one another. It claims Mack came upon Brady watching it on the beach, and they viewed the film together. We know this can’t be true based on everything from the first movie, yet it’s the premise upon which the entire narrative of Teen Beach 2 is built.
Teen Beach 2 also opens up a bit of a paradox with its ending. In the first film, Mack is supposed to go to a private school on the east coast at the end of summer. Her experiences within Wet Side Story change her perspective on life and encourage her to stay at the beach instead. At the close of Teen Beach 2, Wet Side Story never existed, instead becoming Lela: Queen of the Beach. But if Wet Side Story didn’t exist and she never met Brady, then she never underwent the experiences that convinced her to stay at the beach, and she should have gone east to the private school, rendering everything in Teen Beach 2 impossible.
