Quick Answer: Another day, another Game of Thrones Season 6 trailer. In the latest offering from HBO, Sansa is on the run from Ramsay, Daenerys has been taken captive, and the Lannisters are out for blood. Most importantly, the trailer teases that this season we’ll be learning more about Jon Snow’s roots. Season 6 is sure to offer bigger battles than we’ve ever seen, game-changing flashbacks, empowered female characters, and, from the looks of it, twincest. This is Westeros, after all.

Another day, another Game of Thrones (2011 - ) Season 6 trailer. In the latest offering from HBO, things are looking darker than ever. But in the world of Game of Thrones, is that all that surprising? Winter has come, and the dead along with it.

We begin with a glimpse of the fan favourite himself, Jon Snow. Or, should I say, his corpse.

The Lannisters are next to steal the spotlight. “We’re the only ones that matter,” says Jaime to Cersei. “And everything they’ve taken from us, we’re going to take back and more.” In this instance, Jaime is most likely referring to Dorne. Following Myrcella’s death, the Lannisters have more than enough motivation to go to war with the Dornish.

Amidst the chaos, the Sparrows are realizing their strength. “Every one of us is poor and powerless. Yet we can overthrow an empire,” the High Sparrow says. He’s right, of course; they have more power than even the King himself. There is enough to worry about in King’s Landing - Dorne, the Boltons, Sansa, and Tyrion all provide their fair share of stress - but the biggest concern should be the Sparrows. The most dangerous war will very likely be within their borders.

As far as our Mother of Dragons goes, she, like every other character in show, is not in the best of sorts. Thanks to the March Madness promo, we know that she’s being taken to Vaes Dothrak in captivity. But between Ser Jorah, Daario and Drogon looking for her, hopefully she won’t be there for long.

And then, of course, we have Sansa. We don’t see much of her in this trailer, but she certainly doesn’t look as ragged as she did at the end of Season 5. So where is she? Many think she’s at the Wall, but another theory is that she’s back with Littlefinger. He isn’t Sansa’s first choice as an ally, but when you’re accused of murdering the King, your whole family is considered traitors and you’re on the run from your abusive husband, you can’t really afford to be picky.

And what about Littlefinger? Although we only caught a brief glimpse of him, it looks like he’s back in the North, as Cersei has given him the go ahead to gather the knights of the Vale to reclaim the North for the Lannisters. But as we’re dealing with someone as sly and self-serving as Littlefinger, we’ll see if Cersei’s plans come to fruition.

This brings us to the trailer’s most important moment: the long-anticipated flashback sequences. Who we see, however briefly, is enough to more or less confirm that this season we are getting R + L = J. For those not familiar with Game of Thrones’ deep web of fan-fueled speculations, “R + L = J” stands for the popular fan theory that Jon Snow’s parents are not Ned Stark and a mystery women, but rather Daenerys’ brother, Rhaegar Targaryen, and Ned’s sister, Lyanna Stark.

If this is true, Jon would be the heir to the Iron Throne, as well as Daenerys’ nephew. Many people on the internet have speculated that if Jon is in fact a Targaryen and the Night’s Watch were to burn his body, the fire wouldn’t hurt him at all. It may even revive him, as Daenerys came out of the fire unscathed and stronger than ever. Whatever happens, many Game of Thrones fans agree that Jon Snow is not dead, and whether by fires, Melisandre or some other unknown power, he will be resurrected and become Jon Targaryen.

So what’s coming for Season 6 of Game of Thrones? Bigger battles than we’ve ever seen, game-changing flashbacks, empowered female characters, and, from the looks of it, twincest. This is Westeros, after all.
