What Is “Snick,” The Organization That John Lewis and James Forman Are a Part Of?

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC; often pronounced “snick”) formed in April 1960 out of a Shaw University student meeting organized by Ella Baker. It grew into a large organization noted for its involvement in sit-ins, freedom rides, voter registration drives and other Civil Rights activities like the 1963 March on Washington.
