Joel’s decision in the finale of The Last of Us has everyone picking sides!
(Warning: major finale spoilers ahead!)
When Ellie and Joel finally make it to the Firefly encampment after a treacherous journey, Joel learns that apparently the only way to study Ellie’s potentially life-saving immunity is to remove her brain… which would, you know, kill her.
After losing his own daughter to circumstances he couldn’t control, Joel takes matters into his own hands and slaughters the Fireflies, including the only person capable of creating a Cordyceps vaccine. This left many questioning if Joel is the hero or the villain.
As one Twitter user pointed out, Ellie might have been trying to save the world, but Joel was trying to protect his world. Some were also skeptical of the science behind needing to kill her… especially since there was no guarantee it would even work.
But then there’s of course the idea that Joel doomed all of humanity just because he was too afraid to lose someone again.
The finale was the most watched episode in the series, and we have a feeling people will be debating the merits of Joel’s actions for a long time to come. What do you think?
