Swarm: What’s actually based on real life?

Dre, Swarm

Swarm has had the internet buzzing - and wondering how much of it is actually true.

“Swarm” follows an obsessed superfan who’s willing to go to any lengths to see her idol… not too far off from our current culture. (Remember the meltdown over Taylor Swift tickets?!)

Harper’s Bazaar lays out a great argument on why the show’s superstar singer Ni’jah might be inspired by our own icon, Beyonce - including a reference to the alleged elevator fight between her sister and husband.

And the parallels to real life don’t stop there. The show depicts a cult - featuring Billie Eilish in her acting debut - that was actually inspired by a real cult.

But the loose ties to reality, and the mockumentary-style episode, are starting to confuse some fans on what’s fact versus fiction.

While some parts may be based on true stories (four strippers really did trick and kill a good samaritan, for example) most of the show is satire.

The over-the-top violence and mayhem are meant to expose the dangers of Stan culture, not serve as a doc for viewers.
