One of the most popular manga/anime at the moment is One Piece. Audiences around the world have loved the rich storytelling, exciting characters, and great adventures that One Piece has to offer. There’s also the fact that there are over one thousand episodes of the series, which means that there are a lot of stories for fans to enjoy. Recently, One Piece was adapted into a live action television series for Netflix, which came out August 2023. This live-action series has opened up One Piece to a new audience as well as provide a new medium for eager fans. All of this means that One Piece is really popular at the moment, which means that a lot of people are curious about it. Here is some background that you may need if you are curious about One Piece.

What is One Piece about?

One Piece is centered around Monkey D. Luffy, a man who becomes made out of rubber after eating a Devil Fruit. Luffy assembles an adventurous group called The Straw Hat Pirates to go across the East Blue Sea. They are looking for the deceased pirate king Gol D. Roger’s treasure, the One Piece. The Straw Hat Pirates are a colorful pirate crew that are always ready for a fight. Along the way, the group encounters many foes and enemies that they have to fight to carry on their journey. It is certainly not an easy adventure, but the best adventures never are.

Who created One Piece?

The original One Piece manga was created by manga artist Eiichiro Oda in 1996. Oda had recently developed an interest in pirates, so he decided that he was going to make a manga about some pirates. One Piece originally began as two short stories before becoming a long-running manga. Toei Animation was the company that adapted the manga into an anime in 1999. Funimation adapted the anime into the English language in 2004. After that great success, Netflix ordered a live action series, which came out in 2023.

What parts of One Piece serve as the basis for the live action series?

The live action series promises to be faithful to the manga and the anime. Since Oda is serving as an executive producer, it seems that the promise will be kept. He was apparently really involved with the whole creative process to make sure everything went well. The live-action series covers most of the East Blue Saga of the manga and anime. That is about 11 volumes, or 95 chapters and 45 episodes. Of course, it is not a one to one adaptation, and there is some playing around with adapting. Furthermore, this adaptation is covering just a small fraction of the original work. If the live action series continues, there would be a lot more action to cover.

Will One Piece ever end?

One Piece has gained a reputation over the years for seemingly never ending. There are currently 106 volumes of the manga, amounting to 1.076 chapters. The manga is in its 20th season with 1,076 episodes. Over decades, a lot of story has been told and fans have wondered if the series will ever end. However, even though the series has lasted this long, it could be approaching the end. Oda has expressed interest in ending the manga and anime soon, likely around 2024 or 2025. Nothing is set in stone at the moment though. Nevertheless, despite popular belief, the series will not last forever.
