How Did Director Richard Glatzer’s ALS Impact Or Influence “Still Alice”?
Richard Glatzer, the co-director and writer of the film adapation of Still Alice, has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). ALS’ effects are physical, not cognitive like Alzheimer’s, but there are still certain parallels with the film. As Julianne Moore described it, “The idea of having to continue with your life to try to remain in touch with what is essentially yourself — your desires, and the kind of life that you want to lead while dealing with the disease… that’s very much what Rich and Wash are going through, as a couple.” Glatzer, who never missed a day of shooting, handled the physical challenge of directing by communicating through an iPad.
